UKAEA’s pay arrangements and grading structure are currently under review as part of a transformation project and proposed multi-year pay deal. UKAEA aims to introduce a new grading structure in 2024. This will enable us to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximise the scientific and economic benefit. The Role

As a Senior Safety Case Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in overseeing the delivery of Safety Cases for UKAEA’s newbuild portfolio and providing technical leadership in the role of a Senior Safety Case Engineer.

You will lead the development and maintenance of the Safety case for the STEP programme. You will ensure the safety case and supporting documents is fit for purpose and has a timely submission of the relevant safety case documentation. The safety case process output assures the Authority that all process hazards are identified and effectively managed to comply with legislative requirements. Safety Cases are formulated in alignment with those for previously owned UKAEA licensed sites.

The role is responsible for leading the Safety Case Engineering Team under the Technical Authority Function. This entails training and developing Safety Case Engineers, ensuring they are Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) for the Authority. The role also involves maintaining UKAEA standards, engaging in the broader UK nuclear fission safety case engineering, and promoting the identification and progression of relevant good practices.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Manage the development and maintenance of Safety Cases and modifications to Safety Cases for the UKAEA STEP programme. 
  • Co-ordinate expertise from within UKAEA and from external specialist service providers to deliver Safety Case and Safety Engineering activities.
  • Production of Technical Reports in support of the Safety Case. This would involve research into assessment methods and selecting an appropriate methodology.
  • Deputising for Safety Case Engineering Team leader at Site Safety Working Party, and other meetings as required.
  • Contribute to ensuring modern best practices methodologies and technologies are followed.
