What we value at UKAEA

At UKAEA, we are committed to developing our company, the sustainable fusion energy industry, and all of the individuals who work with us.

We value our employees as people and we strive to develop individual skills and careers throughout our extensive training programmes.

Our values are at the core of everything we do:

  1. Innovation – We will seek out ways to do things better, be that designing fusion systems or how we operate our organisation.
  2. Commitment – We believe in what we do, the importance of our mission, and doing what we can to achieve it.
  3. Trust – We strive to be open, transparent and inclusive, so that everyone we work with believes and values what we say and do.
  4. Collaboration – We believe in the power and importance of working in partnership.

We achieve these goals through: diversity and inclusion; learning and development; mentoring support; and health and wellbeing. By bringing together career opportunities and individual needs, we support our staff in everything they do.

We are constantly on the lookout for people who want to shape the future of the world’s energy. If that sounds like you, and you want to join a company that cares about you as an individual, take a look at our current vacancies.

Diversity and inclusion

Our commitment to equal opportunities

Here at UKAEA, we are committed to equal opportunities for all people, and we aim to create a workplace that celebrates the diversity of our employees. We support every employee to fulfil their potential and contribute to a mission that really matters. You’ll see this attitude throughout the UKAEA team, right to the top of our company.

Our dedication to equality and diversity is recognised by the Athena SWAN accreditation programme. Athena SWAN aims to increase the number of women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine).

We work in partnership with Inclusive Companies, Vercida, Women in Nuclear schemes and Equal Engineers. These industry standard bodies help us to achieve an equal workplace, supporting those from under-represented groups in society.

We also have a number of recognised official internal networks as well as more informal employee groups, which provide a safe space for people facing similar challenges to support one another at UKAEA. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Ethnicity, nationality and culture (ENACT) Network
  • Women’s Network
  • LGBTQ+ Network
  • Parent Buddy Scheme
UKAEA CEO, Professor Ian Chapman

We are committed to fostering an environment and culture where everybody can do their best, contribute to our success and are rewarded fairly. Only through nurturing diversity of background, skills and thought in a culture where everyone is included can we enable brilliant people to achieve brilliant things

We offer a huge range of learning and development opportunities to support our employees’ individual career aspirations. These range from early career help, to mentoring and development opportunities for all staff members.

We also offer structured development schemes tailored to the individual’s development as needed by the business and career trajectories.

We have set up a mentoring scheme to support employees through their professional development and career. During this mentor training, the mentor and the mentee will work together in order to discover more about the mentee, who they are as a person, as well as their capabilities and potential.

Mentoring schemes in the workplace, with an effective mentor, can help the individual to seek guidance, help, support and feedback needed to further their progression.

It’s well known that healthy and happy employees contribute more to their workplace and society as a whole. We have a health and wellbeing programme available to increase employee mental and physical health.

Our health and wellbeing schemes include:

  • An onsite Occupational Health service
  • An employee assistance programme
  • Personal, financial, legal and workplace advice

Our wellbeing initiatives are available to all staff members because each individual makes us stronger as a whole.

At UKAEA, we truly value individuals and their needs. We see health and wellbeing as a broader topic than just workplace wellbeing. We consider personal wellbeing, work-life balance, commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and work flexibility as part of this.

We value company culture and social events at UKAEA too. Our internal social club supports a wide range of clubs and societies. We organise events onsite, at both Culham and Rotherham. From bonfire nights to summer festivals, we welcome employees to bring their families to our events, because we all have lives beyond work.

The UKAEA team have always listened and helped with our issues where they could. It’s not just the support staff, my fellow graduates on the scheme have been instrumental to my development during my time here. We are all supportive of each other and help whenever required.
