Senior Electrical Power Engineer

Overview of Responsibilities

About us

Fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research organisations to achieve ground-breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid by developing the power stations of tomorrow and the skilled workforce to deliver them.

About the job

As a Senior Electrical Power Engineer, you’ll provide technical leadership on complex electrical power projects across LV, MV and HV distribution networks. You’ll help deliver safe, reliable power systems that support UKAEA’s facilities, future fusion technology and high-power computing programmes. This is an opportunity to apply your specialist expertise to technically challenging projects with significant impact across the organisation.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead medium-to-large LV and MV distribution projects from concept through detailed design and delivery.
  • Lead the design and development of HV/MV/LV earthing systems, including specification and interpretation of soil resistivity surveys, soil modelling, earth grid/electrode resistance calculations, earth potential rise (EPR), touch and step voltage assessments, transferred-potential studies, fault-current distribution and mitigation measures.
  • Prepare and review earthing calculations, models, drawings, specifications and test requirements, ensuring compliance with BS EN 50522, BS EN IEC 61936-1, BS 7430 and applicable ENA/DNO requirements.
  • Provide specialist technical authority for LV, MV and HV distribution networks across projects and programmes.
  • Deliver power systems studies, including load flow, protection coordination, short-circuit and power quality analysis.
  • Design, assess and assure electrical distribution systems using engineering software and first-principles calculations.
  • Interpret complex electrical drawings, including protection and control schemes, and develop compliant technical solutions.
  • Lead technical work packages, authorise project milestones and technical documentation, and support delivery within agreed budgets and specifications.
  • Provide technical consultancy on HV networks, including 11kV, 33kV, 132kV and 400kV systems, and support network requirements across the product lifecycle.
  • Supervise electrical staff and contractors, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and resolve complex system integration challenges.
  • Prepare and review engineering procedures, risk assessments, method statements, technical reports, local rules and supplier documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and training while ensuring work complies with legislation, codes of practice and UKAEA safety, quality and technical requirements.

What You’ll Bring

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering and significant professional experience in electrical engineering, with Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status or active progression towards it.
  • Extensive post-qualification experience in power distribution, including substantial experience with LV and MV distribution networks in industrial, hazardous or harsh environments.
  • Experience of designing, installing and testing LV and MV distribution networks, including issuing electrical isolations and racking circuit breakers in LV, MV and HV systems.
  • Competence using electrical design and analysis software such as ETAP and ElectricalOM for LV, MV and HV network studies.
  • Demonstrable experience interpreting complex electrical drawings, including protection and control schemes for LV, MV and HV systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical safety practices and experience preparing safety documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, permits and isolations.
