Overview of Responsibilities

The salary for this role is £34,568  inclusive of Specialist Allowance. Onsite working is expected for 5 days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working. 

This role is based at the following site; Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data. 

The Role

As Nuclear Technician, you will play a pivotal role in focusing on the maintenance and management of the Radiological Assay and Detection Lab (Nuclear measurement lab-RADLab) to facilitate the successful delivery of services and R&D delivered by the ART group. Working alongside experimental nuclear physicists, external collaborators and with other divisions at the UKAEA, including Health Physics, you will contribute important practical support for equipment, plans and procedures.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support experimental activities relevant to the services provided in characterisation and assay by the RADLab, for example:
    • Ensure new work is captured in project request forms and provide quotes
    • Arrange health physics support for transporting and clearing samples
    • Collect data and uploading where appropriate
    • Transport and set up equipment for in-situ measurements
    • Update the project status in the tracker.
  • Support the maintenance, calibration, development, and deployment of nuclear diagnostics (gamma or neutron), for example:
    • Asset management, including software license management, and stock monitoring for consumable items
    • Facilitate deliveries, which might require coordinating work with the rigging team
    • Arrange and facilitating routine lab checks, including PAT testing, scales calibration, lift equipment assessments, gas and liquid nitrogen refills
    • Routine lab maintenance, including filter changes, quality assurance checks, and annual re-calibration of detectors. Arranging equipment repairs as required
    • Tidy of the lab space.
  • Contribute towards preparation of reports and documentation, particularly:
    • Risk assessments
    • Method statements
    • Signage.
  • Provide training, lab inductions and tours as required, and manage access to data and reports.
  • Contribute to improving best practices and quality standards within the team, division and across the organisation.
  • Ensure your behaviour promotes the safety, health and welfare of yourself and colleagues.

  • Work in accordance with UKAEA policy and undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties requested by Management.
