Overview of Responsibilities

As Liquid Metal MHD Lead you will lead activities associated with validation of fusion components that utilise flowing liquid metals, with a particular focus on understanding magnetohydrodynamic phenomena through experimental work.

You will work with, and lead experimental work on, liquid metal aspects of facilities such as CHIMERA at FTF – a unique facility for testing component-scale equipment with liquid metals in strong magnetic fields. 

Key Duties:

  • Lead the development of testing of liquid metals, including magnetohydrodynamic effects, for validation of fusion components in representative environments
  • Provide technical expertise on design and exploitation of liquid metal test facilities including experiment design, diagnostic techniques, and safe operational practices
  • Provide technical input on use of computer simulation for modelling of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena within liquid metal cooled components to enable component validation
  • Shape and deliver UKAEA’s strategy for liquid metal testing and component validation by building capability in this growing area
  • Collaborate extensively across internal and external groups and programmes to solve liquid metal testing and component validation challenges for fusion
  • Additional Information:

  • Travel between Rotherham and Culham will be necessary. 
  • Hybrid working will be considered


£49,396 to £63,855 (inclusive of MPP) + excellent benefits including outstanding pension
