Overview of Responsibilities

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for either a Health Physics Technician or a Trainee Health Physics Technician. The role will be varied and is one of the few positions where support to operations is required in all areas of site.

As a Technician, you will be required to maintain a radiological protection and occupational hygiene service and also provide specialised monitoring support for a wide range of radiological and workplace hazards. You will provide operational Health Physics advice as requested to engineers and plant technicians for radiological and beryllium related tasks at Culham.

To be succeful you will require strong interpersonal skills, the ability to flexibly respond to changes in operational priorities and deliver a high-quality service to a wide range of professional engineers and technicians. A full and clean driving licence is required.

What will you be responsible for?

Key duties:

  • Undertake routine surface and airborne contamination monitoring for the control of radiological and beryllium hazards for assessment of site working procedures.
  • Set up work areas with the appropriate designation for radiological/beryllium. Ensure control measures are correctly applied and written procedures followed as per work permits/authorisations.
  • Audit of NDT radiography operations.
  • Perform confined space atmospheric checks and other occupational hygiene measurements for hazardous chemicals as required for work control.
  • Respond to requests for support in response to incidents including spills, leaks, releases of radioactivity, chemical release or for site emergency conditions.
  • Level 3 Technician roles can provide cover for overtime, shifts and on-call support (including RADSAFE) when required, once training is complete.

Health Physics Technicians may need to be designated as Classified Radiation Workers under IRR17 and under site procedures will be registered beryllium workers for which a medical examination is required.

Candidates will also need to be medically fit to wear pressurised suits and other respiratory protective equipment. You may also be required to provide cover for overtime, shifts and on-call support.

£23,464 to £29,761 + excellent benefits including outstanding pension
